How to Prepare Clothing Photos for AI Editing — Best Practices

AI editing amplifies whatever you feed it. Lighting, steaming, framing, and file specs that make ghost mannequin and retouching results dramatically better.

AI image editing is forgiving — but not magic. The single biggest predictor of a great ghost mannequin result is not the model; it is the source photo. A garment shot with even light, smooth fabric, and a clean silhouette reconstructs almost perfectly. The same garment shot wrinkled, backlit, and cropped at the elbows gives the AI nothing to work with. This checklist covers everything that matters before you upload.

Lighting: even and diffuse beats dramatic

  • Use two diffuse light sources (softboxes, or windows with sheer curtains) at 45° angles to kill hard shadows.
  • Avoid strong backlight — a bright window behind the garment blows out edges and confuses isolation.
  • Match white balance between shots; mixed warm/cool light across a catalog is painful to correct later.
  • If you only have one light, bounce it off a white wall or foam board for wraparound softness.

Fabric preparation: steam before you shoot

Wrinkles are the number one quality killer in AI garment editing. Deep creases read as design elements — seam lines, pleats, distressing — and the AI will faithfully preserve them. Steam or iron the garment, let it hang for a few minutes, and brush the fabric. If steaming is impossible (shipping deadlines, delicate fabrics), shoot anyway and run the AI wrinkle smoother first, then generate the ghost mannequin pass.

Camera position and framing

  • Camera at chest height, lens parallel to the garment — tilting distorts the shoulders and hem.
  • Garment fills 70–85% of the frame with margin on all sides; edge-cropped garments cannot be reconstructed cleanly.
  • For flat lays, shoot from directly overhead using a level or grid overlay.
  • Focus on the collar. It anchors the synthesized interior and is where shoppers look first.

Background and staging

You do not need a professional cyc wall. A plain wall, a clean table, even a hardwood floor works — the AI isolates the garment regardless. What hurts is visual noise that merges with the garment: patterned backgrounds touching printed fabric, hangers or clips overlapping the shoulders, and props in the frame. Remove everything that is not the garment.

File specifications that matter

FormatJPG, PNG, WEBPJPG at high quality

Pre-flight checklist

  • Garment steamed and brushed, tags and pins removed or tucked.
  • Even diffuse lighting, no hard side shadows, correct white balance.
  • Camera level, chest height, collar in focus.
  • Framing with margin — nothing cropped at the edge.
  • Plain background, no props or hangers overlapping.
  • sRGB JPG at 1500px+ saved and ready to upload.

Spend five minutes on this checklist and every downstream step — mannequin removal, background isolation, recoloring — gets faster and cleaner. The AI will meet you more than halfway; give it a fair start.
